Caught fresh today from a farmstand on Main Road in Southold. For the veggie garden, two “patio” tomato plants ($5 each), and basil (4 for $10). For the table, a quart of Strawberries, $4.95, (with a few missing off the top already, sorry about that), 1lb bunch of asparagus (can almost eat raw), a bag of mixed baby spring lettuce, (romaine, boston and something else), and a dozen extra large farm eggs, $13 in total. All produce picked fresh this morning, washed and ready to eat. Best eaten before refrigeration is needed. Total investment in local economy $33.

old fashioned street fair
Food, entertainment and many unique arts and crafts form only a part of our 30th Annual Mattituck Street Fair in Love Lane on Saturday, July 12, 2008. We will have a rain date on the next day, Sunday the 13th of July on a rain or shine basis. Famous Love Lane is the heart of Mattituck, the place where local necessities meet modern luxuries and fun. From the candy-striped barber pole and town post office to the gift and food stores, this is where locals and visitors mingle to enjoy the event, especially the Little Miss Mattituck contest. A tremendous volunteer effort by the Mattituck Chamber of Commerce, culminating in a spectacular outdoor screening of the movie “Grease” as dusk turns into nightfall.

kayak racing

Saturday June 14th 2008, a kayak race from Orient to Greenport is being run by a group of local outdoor enthusiasts, residents and business owners who would like to promote the sport of kayaking on the North Fork of Long Island, New York. It’s a 10k on water race for kayaks, and there is a 100 boat limit. The weather delay date is June 15th. There will be cash prizes and a barbecue at the end of the race, which will take place at Mitchell Park in Greenport. The 2008 Greenport Kayak Race is to introduce to the public the “Nature Trail Kayak System”, which circumnavigates Greenport and Southold, proceeds to help implementation of signage at trail heads/creeks to help improve boater awareness. jazz on the vine
Let’s face it, nobody wants a beach and boating holiday with 2ft of snow on the ground. Various creative Valentines Day themed parties floated around at that time of year, then suddenly it all came together in 2008, when over the course of 5 weekends in February and March, participating wineries celebrated the Long island Winterfest with “Jazz on the Vine”. Wow! Jaws dropped, people appeared from nowhere, it was a huge success.
In total, nearly 50 FREE jazz concerts took place in various tasting rooms and received rave reviews from crowds that equaled those of harvest time. Clearly, wine and jazz is a winning combination for everyone involved. Folks who turned up for the music discovered new wines, while others sipping old favorites really appreciated quality musical and artistic talent. Fine wine, good food, great music, fun company – jazz on the vine had it all. So save the date for Long Island Winterfest 2009, book early and often! Book mark the website for details nearer the time.
